Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
