Fierce Gales Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents advised to remain inside as strong winds strike the nation.

Intense gales hitting velocities of as high as 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in nearly 90,000 households lacking electricity and compelled officials to halt over 100 flights, as reported by regional news sources.

These gusts are affecting the complete South Island and southern parts of the North Island, per the weather forecasting body.

The nation's agencies have issued rare high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in core zones such as Wellington and Canterbury.

Residents have been encouraged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and get ready for additional power and communication outages.

Extensive Destruction and Crisis Response

The power cut appears to be affecting residences mainly in the southern region, though officials report that power was being restored progressively.

Regional news have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, and power lines and trees have been toppled by the gales.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Flights to and from the city have been suspended due to the gusts, while some roads and libraries are not operating.

At the same time Canterbury officials have issued a crisis declaration, to assist disaster response efforts.
