Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," Healey commented. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
