The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
