UK Expands Methanol Toxicity Advisory List with Eleven Nations
The UK government has placed an additional eleven new nations to its public warning register regarding the threats of methanol toxicity from adulterated beverages.
This updated warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.
Just last month, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing roster, in response to a number of serious incidents like the fatal death of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being cautions that even small amounts of methanol can result in blindness or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.
Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?
Toxic alcohol is a poisonous chemical typically employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for drinking.
Although it is generated during the creation of spirits, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.
However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to identify.
Authorities' Guidance for Tourists
Authorities minister a senior official said that all travellers should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol poisoning.
"If you're consuming alcohol in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," Falconer said.
"In case something seems unusual, like a headache that's way worse than typical or sight issues – get medical help right away."
The complete roster of destinations identified as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
