Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
